Go Green While Moving House

Moving house is one of those big tasks which you have to put everything else on hold for. But that doesn't mean you should compromise on your consideration for the environment while moving. Moving home and staying green requires some planning and good packing practices. Here are a few tips from Moving House Blog for reducing your carbon footprint during a move.
- Use recycled materials wherever possible. Start with your boxes, and pick up some recycled produce containers from your local retailer. Storage companies, movers, and post offices will also stock recycled packing materials to put in those boxes. Alternatively you can just pack clothes and bedding around fragile items, and hire re-usable plastic boxes for your move.
- Enlist the help of a green moving company. Check their credentials, and speak with them about their efforts to stay green.
- The less you move the better, as a heavily loaded truck will burn more fuel, which means a bigger carbon footprint. Turn a critical eye on your possessions, and decide what you'll really need in your new place. Leave everything else behind, and if that's not possible, recycle unwanted possessions, or put them up for sale or donation.
- After you move in, the new place might be dirty, but that doesn't mean you should go too heavy on cleaning chemicals. Instead of using harsh products like bleach, use white vinegar, or baking soda and lemon.
